Costumes: Eras(50s, 70s, 80, 90s)

50s

When we thought of 50s, Grease came to mind straight away. With this one reference ,we were able to use that to create the costumes for the two leads in the music video.

Danny Zuko from Grease

For Jacob, we decided Danny Zuko was the best template we'd use. So we wanted the iconic 'Greasers' hair style to have intertexual references of Grease, with the leather jacket, white shirt, black trousers and black shoes.

50s Housewives

Whereas for Juliette, we didn't have any intertexual references on the costume but it was still a 50s outfit. We wanted her to look like a '50s housewife', which was the general fashion at the time.

Makeup and Hairstyle for 50s

For makeup, Juliette had to have winged eyeliner with matte red lipstick. With the hair, she followed a tutorial to get a similar hairstyle to the image on the left including a bandanna.

70s

In 70s, for the male costume, we were inspired by the glam rock style represented in the film 'Velvet Goldmine' which is set in the 70s. We tried to remake the androgynous image that was made in 'Velvet Goldmine'

So for the lead singer's 70s costume, he wears a small tight top, bootleg jeans and black shoes. To make him more androgynous, he would wear a small amount of make up that makes you wonder whether or not he is wearing any.

For the female lead, we wanted to reference the 'hippie age' in the 70s. In the music video, so her hairstyle isn't plain, we added a flower-chain headband.

80s

In 80s, what came to mind was Rick Astley's 'Never Gonna Give You Up'; we looked at the music video to find him wearing double denim: denim top and demon trousers. As a result we references Rick Astley costume-wise.

For the female lead, we had an interetexual reference of 'The Breakfast Club', with the oversized jumper and long maxi dress, similar to the costume of Allison Reynolds. This was easy to source and recreate. Her costume included an oversized jumper, long maxi dress and old looking Doc Martin shoes. Her make-up, to match 'The Breakfast Club' character, was natural and light.

90s

For our target audience, we thought the most iconic reference during 1990 would be F.R.I.E.N.D.S. So the female lead, we decided for her to wear dungarees with a white top, similar to the Rachel's costume in some episodes.

Juliette in 90s costume
At first, we were going t have Juliette wear a crop top which Rachel wears in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. However after reviewing how she would be dancing vigorously, it would be impractical to wear a crop top, so we decided on her wearing a white shirt. Her outfit would include; dungarees ,white shirt and vans. Her make up would also be natural looking and plain, similar to the 80s.

Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S
For Jacob, we used Joey as a template, as 90s males tend to wear baggy trousers and plaid shirts over an undershirt.
